Trakošćan Castle - lake - fairy path

Trakošćan Castle, perched on a hill amidst lush greenery, is one of the most iconic cultural and historical symbols of Croatia. According to legend, Trakošćan got its name from a Thracian fort (arx Thacorum) that supposedly existed in ancient times. Another preserved tale suggests that it was named after the knights of Drachenstein, who ruled the area in the early Middle Ages. With a history dating back to the 13th century, the castle has been home to noble families over the centuries and now stands as a museum where visitors can feel the spirit of the past. The rooms are decorated in a style that honors the aristocratic way of life, while collections of weaponry, paintings, tableware, and furniture transport guests back to the golden age of the castle. The view from the castle stretches across the entire landscape, encompassing the rolling hills of Zagorje and the tranquil lake that surrounds it.

The castle's immediate surroundings are designed as a landscaped park, where the lake, meadows, and clusters of trees and shrubs form a harmonious horticultural ensemble. A distinctive feature of Trakošćan is the large artificial lake situated at the base of the castle. Since its creation, the lake has served a dual purpose—economic, as a fishpond, and aesthetic, as a decorative element typical of Romantic park architecture. Walking paths along the lake provide a unique promenade, allowing visitors to fully experience the natural beauty of the area.

Encircling the lake is a well-maintained path known as the Fairy Path, which reveals the natural wonders of the Trakošćan park forest and surrounding area. The path stretches approximately five kilometers and is suitable for all ages, making it the perfect spot for families, nature enthusiasts, and anyone seeking a unique outdoor adventure. The walk takes about two hours and includes 20 educational points along the way. Strolling along this path, visitors can enjoy the peace and quiet, and as they pass through dense foliage and shaded trails, it feels as though they have stepped into a world of fairies and magical creatures from old tales.
